Chapter Ten

Lany

I winced as the doctor finished wrapping my arm. He'd given me a shot for the pain, but it was still tender. No matter how good the drugs were that they gave me, getting stitches always hurt a bit afterward.

"Keep it clean and—"

I held up my hand. "I know the routine, Doc. Thanks."

Hell, I was practically an expert.

The older man patted my arm, the uninjured one. "You'll be fine, young man."

"Oh wait, will the salt water bother it?"

I wasn't going to be locked up forever.

I hoped.

"I'd stay out of the ocean for at least forty-eight hours, give it time to heal a bit. After that you should be fine."

"Thanks, Doc."

After the man stood and started for the front door, I turned my attention to the small group standing across the room from me. "Sal?"

My husband turned and glanced over his shoulder. When he spotted me watching him, he said something to the others then hurried over to me. "Hey, caro, how are you feeling?"

"Surprisingly okay."

Maybe I was getting used to this crap.

Wasn't that sad?

"Do we know anything yet?"

Sal shook his head. "Milla has people searching the area you indicated, and I'm waiting for Jerry to call me back."

"Did you talk to the guys?"

Sal nodded. "They're packing now. Your father arranged for an airplane to meet them at the airport so they can fly directly here. They should be here by morning."

I had to wonder at the relief I felt knowing that. "Can they bring Eddie?"

"You want Eddie to come here?" Sal's voice was filled with incredibility. "Now?"

I shrugged. "He's my friend."

I needed the moral support.

"I understand that, Lany, but can you imagine what would happen to this tiny little island if he got hurt?"

Oh, right.

I winced. "Yeah, maybe not."

The island would be flattened.

My best friend, Eddie Wu, also known as Edward Gambino, was the adopted son of alleged mobster Carlos Gambino and adopted nephew of former alleged mobster Vincenzo Castellano. If something happened to him, both families would be coming.

It wouldn't be pretty.

"Can you help me up?" I held out my arms.

"Why don't you just relax here on the couch?" Sal asked even as he helped me sit up.

"Because I'm hungry and thirsty. We were headed inside for snack time when you came down to the beach."

"Tell me what you want and I'll get it for you, caro."

I smiled as I settled back against the cushions. "Surprise me."

After Sal got up and headed for the kitchen I glanced over at the other three people still in the room. They seemed occupied talking about whatever it was they were talking about. None of them were paying me any attention.

I pulled my cell phone out of my pocket and dialed Lyn. "Hey, you packing?"

"I'm already on my way to the airport with Clarke," Lyn replied.

"Oh, sorry."

Things were weird between Lyn and Clarke. Tense. I often thought they might have something together, but Lyn had had a steady boyfriend for the last few months, and it wasn't Clarke.

"It's all good." Lyn chuckled. "What's up?"

"I'm just worried that we won't be able to catch this psycho bitch.
